South Central Railway was introduced on 2nd of October 1966, and is one of the first nine zones introduced by the Indian Railways. Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Guntakal, Guntur and Nandad are the six divisions of the south central zone. It has its headquarters at Secunderabad and covers the states on Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

There are many ways to book tickets in South Central Zone, of which the online method on the website of IRCTC is preferred by majority of the people. It has introduced computerized passenger reservation systems in 85 stations out of its 689 railway stations. The IVRS or interactive voice response system introduced by it allows you to make any enquiry on trains by dialing the number 139. National Train Enquiry system provides you real time information on trains such as the position of a train, when it is expected to reach the nearest station etc. This way you will come to know whether a train is running late or not.

Vijayawada is one of the busiest and major railway stations in South Central Zone. It has 10 platforms and handles about 1, 00,000 passengers daily. Stations under South Central Railway has all the facilities like book stalls, canteens, tea stalls, waiting rooms, enquiry counters, internet café, STD booth and much more for the convenience of the passengers.
